iPhone 3Gs Update – Stuck in the Dark Ages

Submitted by on July 8, 2009 – 5:36 pmNo Comment

Actually, I have moved into complacency. My iPhone 3Gs (and now sometimes my son’s) still disconnects from the towers and I don’t receive calls or voicemails for hours.  AT&T and iPhone won’t do anything about it because technically, there is no AT&T service in Bend, Oregon.

Funny, but until I ordered my iPhone, there was absolutely no problem with receiving calls.  Friends here who have iPhones have no problems.  My son had no problems until they started messing with which phone number went with which phone.

So after 16 phone calls (really!) I have to look at my options:

  • I could go back to my old phone but then why did I get a new one?  (and would the change of phone mess things up even worse?)
  • I can just reset my network settings throughout the day and hope no important calls are missed and arrange to call people when I have phone appointments.
  • I can check it out when I get to a place with “good” AT&T coverage.  And then go to an AT&T store and an Apple store and see if we can’t get this all working.

I think there is something about the 3Gs that has more troubles receiving from the towers.  (Plus all the other messups that happened with AT&T.)

We get so reliant on our phones and other technology, that we can feel helpless when they don’t work. I guess we have to just remember how it was 5 years ago, in the dark ages when we couldn’t get email, phone calls, etc whenever we wanted.  And we’ll just have to set places to meet when we are at events or meeting someone.  How barbaric to not just be able to pick up the phone and say “where are you?”  or to have to wait until I get home to get my messages!

What’s next? Facebook and Twitter going down?  I would be absolutely stranded.  ;)
